Saracens scraped a 20-16 home victory over Biarritz on Sunday afternoon to keep their hopes of a Heineken Cup quarter-final berth alive.
The Men in Black now require a single point from their away match against Treviso to qualify for the knock-out stages of the premier European competition.
Dimitri Yachvili and new England squad member Owen Farrell traded penalties before Saracens scored their only try of the match after twenty minutes.
David Strettle picked up a loose ball before releasing Chris Wyles. The USA winger made good ground before being taken down metres short, and 19 year old scrum-half Ben Spencer sniped over from a ruck, showing great strength to evade three tacklers and touch down.
Farrell hit a further penalty to give Saracens the lead at half time.
The home side began the second half strongly, but Biarritz soon started to ramp up the pressure and scored a charge-down try of their own.
Further penalties were then exchanged but Sarries held out to secure the win.
This was an assured performance from Saracens against a strong Biarritz side, especially from their England contingent.
However, they will need to show more attacking intent if they are to progress beyond the quarter-finals of the competition.
