An 87-year-old silver surfer who uses Facebook to keep in touch with loved ones has been given an award for contributing to her community – in the same week that her granddaughter also picked up a prestigious accolade.
Madge Field was presented the Fred Buglass Award by Leverstock Green Village Association, after being nominated for the accolade by previous winner Barbara Chapman.
Mrs Field has lived in Leverstock Green since her childhood and is a church warden, organises a Monday afternoon sewing group and arranges the church flower rota.
She has a Facebook account, which she uses to keep in touch with her grand-daughter who is away at university, a goddaughter in Egypt and a godson in Exeter.
Madge’s daughter Sally Masterson said: “She uses it to keep in contact and gets to see what they’re all up to. She is amazing.”
Just days later, Madge’s grand-daughter Jemma Masterson won the national YMCA Youth Matters Young Volunteer of the Year Award.
The 20-year-old, from Grovehill, Hemel Hempstead, started helping out at the YMCA in Worcester as part of her university course in youth and community development.
She beat five others who were short-listed for the accolade and attended a glitzy final with her family in London on Wednesday last week.
Mum Sally said: “It was just absolutely brilliant.
“I was so proud.”
