MORE than 250 drivers were given formal penalties for having misrepresented number plates in a month long police campaign.

It was carried out between Beds, Herts and Cambridgeshire police forces – but the greatest number of vehicles were nabbed in Herts.

During what the law enforcers dubbed Operation Dragon, 60 vehicles were stopped in Beds and 62 in Cambs – but that number was 156 in Herts.

The drivers were given a fixed penalty ticket, vehicle defect rectification notice or police warning during the March crack-down. Number plates which are difficult to read correctly are illegal.

Police Inspector Andy Piper said: “If you are displaying a number plate which is illegal, you will be pulled over and could face a fine of up to £1,000.”
