HERTFORDSHIRE Mavericks have been crowned Fiat Netball Superleague champions after a 57-45 win over Surrey Storm in the grand final of the competition.
After a quick start from Hertfordshire, Surrey hit back to take a one-goal lead into half-time.
However, Mavericks’ inspirational coach Maggie Jackson made changes at the interval – and that proved to be the turning point as Herts stormed clear in the second half to claim the title.
Louisa Brownfield started the game well for the Mavericks as she sent her side into a 3-0 lead inside a minute, but visitors Surrey rallied to lead 6-5 at the mid-way point in the match.
Knowing something needed to be done to change the pattern of the game, Herts coach Jackson made a number of tactical changes and, sure enough, they paid dividends as Mavericks hurtled into a six-goal lead.
From then on there was only going to be one winner, and despite Storm fighting back to reduce the deficit to 45-42 with eight minutes remaining, Herts dug deep to surge clear and seal the victory.
