Villagers foot the bill after traffic plans are rejected

COUNCIL tax was raised by 65 per cent to help pay for a survey asking villagers if they wanted new traffic calming measures – which they voted against.

Potten End Parish Council raised its rate from £13.36 in the 2010 to 11 financial year to £21.99 in the current financial year.

Responding to complaints at a meeting on Thursday, chairman Simon Barnard said it was for a village warden and traffic survey.

In the survey, villagers were shown plans for several options that could be introduced to slow speed in Potten End – but they voted against all of them.

Potten End Parish Council now charges the seventh highest tax rate out of 16 town and parish councils in Dacorum.

Its rate will rise by 2p in the next financial year.

Mr Barnard said: “There are cost increases that we have to pay for such as grass-cutting. We like to keep the place looking nice and have regular meetings about it.”
