One half of a top cooking duo based in Potten End made an appearance on BBC Three Counties Radio at the weekend.

Chef Hoops Anderson - who runs catering company Main Ingredient with Flip Woods - chatted on air with presenter Nick Coffer about two dishes she’d brought in.

She joined Russell Bateman – head chef at Collette’s Restaurant at The Grove in Watford – and Alec Goodhand, who is in charge of the kitchen at That Little Place in Harpenden, and together they tasted and discussed all the dishes that were brought forth to the DJ decks.

Hoops served up simple spicy pork ragu with fettuccine and a lemon and ricotta cake to finish.

Both recipes can be found on the {http://www.mainingredient.co.uk/|Main Ingredient website} if you want to try them for yourself.

They’re off! The search for the best businesses across Hertfordshire has hit the ground running.

Companies across Dacorum have been challenged to show the rest of the county how good they are by entering the easy-to-enter Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) Hertfordshire Business Awards.

The contest is for all small businesses, not just members of the FSB.

Herts FSB chairman Pam Charman said: “These awards are a challenge to those great businesses in Dacorum to prove how good they are.

“We urge them to put their heads above the parapet and get noticed.

“We expect there will be friendly rivalry from across the boroughs, towns, city and districts to win the accolades in this free-to-enter contest.

“The Herts branch of the FSB is the biggest in the country with 3,000 members. This is an excellent chance for them to put their case for glory in front of our independent panel of judges.”

Awards organiser Damian Cummins said: “Our awards remain free to enter and are easier to enter than ever.

“We’ve streamlined the whole entry process this year, adding helpful hints to our entry forms to help busy entrepreneurs make the best entries possible.

“For small businesses looking to market their goods and services to a county audience, it could be the most effective marketing exercise you’ve done this year. Awards are also a fantastic networking opportunity.”

The awards are open to any sole trader or company employing up to 250 employees in Hertfordshire.

Categories include Dacorum Business of the Year, sponsored by Dacorum Borough Council.

Entrants can go for glory in up to three different categories, with the general ones being Best New Business, Employee of the Year, Business Person of the Year, the Training & Development Award, Young Business Person of the Year, the Business Innovation Award, the Green Business Award, Service Excellence Award, Real Life Entrepreneur, Retailer of the Year and Community Business of the Year.

From all these award winners will emerge the overall county winner.

To find out more and to enter, visit www.fsb.org.uk/hertsawards.

Entries must be received by April 24.

Levy Green Whites produce a cup upset to book a semi-final spot

Leverstock Green Ladies Whites are through to the Senior County Cup semi-finals after a 4-2 win over a Hoddesdon side who play two divisions above them in the football pyramid.

Levy started well and took the lead inside a minute through Anna Novelli, and she made it 2-0 just three minutes later.

Hoddesdon hit back, but Levy earned the win with further goals from Frankie Novelli and Mia Hickey.

Playing in their first competitive game since January 12, and at the sixth time of asking, this County Cup quarter-final match finally took place.

Leverstock faced tough opposition but they wasted no time in taking the game to the home side when Cally Salter battled through a couple of challenges immediately from the kick-off to set up Novelli who fired home to give Levy the lead within 30 seconds of the start.

Amazingly, Novelli doubled lead less than three minutes later when she hunted the ball down to create and dispatch her second chance of the game against a shell-shocked Hoddesdon outfit.

Levy Green continued to press and create further opportunities and should really have extended the lead on more than one other occasion before Hoddesdon began to regain some composure and get a foothold in the game.

After a period of intense end to end action Hoddesdon finally got their breakthrough when Levy failed to clear their lines and the home side capitalised on this indecision to reduce the lead to 2-1 after 24 minutes.

Just four minutes later, however, the two-goal Levy Green advantage was restored when a Hoddesdon clearance fell to Frankie Novelli on the right hand flank and in a moment of inspiration she hit the ball on the half-volley from all of 30 yards into the far left-hand corner of the goal.

With half-time looming, Green once again gave their hosts encouragement when a sloppy clearance gifted Hoddesdon a second goal after 42 minutes and saw the teams go into the half-time break with Levy holding narrow 3-2 advantage.

Unsurprisingly, Hoddesdon began the second period fired up and dominated the game for large spells of the opening 20 minutes of the half.

It was a tough challenge for the young Levy Green players to deal with, but deal with it they did and, after settling back into the game, they began to get more possession of the ball.

Mia Hickey capitalised on some Hoddesdon indecision to drive into the box, and just as it looked like the keeper had done enough, Hickey managed to spin with her back to goal to fire home and give Levy Green an unassailable 4-2 lead.

The last 20 minutes were fiercely competitive and as tempers flared the referee began to issue some yellow cards.

But with each and every one of the Levy Green players putting in a shift they saw the game home to earn a semi-final against the Leverstock Green Ladies 1st XI at Pancake Lane next Sunday.

Cally Salter was awarded player of the match, but special praise goes to all of the girls for the huge workload they got through in both attacking and defensive duties.

Royal Mail has been awarded high marks for the service it provides to the Hemel Hempstead postcode area.

Latest figures show that in the HP postcode area between April and December 2013, 94.6 per cent of first class mail was delivered on time, the next day after posting. Nationwide, Royal Mail met its first class letters and parcels quality target after the first three quarters of the 2013/14 financial year, according to independent research.

For first class mail, the target of 93 per cent delivered the following working day was achieved, and for second class letters and parcels this was exceeded, with 98.8 per cent delivered within three working days. The target is 98.5 per cent.

The target beating performance is put down to new technology, better equipment and changing working practices. A spokesman said: “The quality of our service to customers is key to our success.”

Goals galore in an exciting week for Hemel Hempastead Leisure Leagues sides

The Fellowship and 2 Goals 1 Cup shared a 15-goal thriller in the latest round of Hemel Hempstead Leisure Leagues fixtures.

The Fellowship were quick out of the blocks, finding themselves four goals up within eight minutes.

2 Goals responded well, however, firing in several goals and reducing the deficit at the half-time break to 5-4.

2 Goals used the break wisely and, despite three of The Fellowship players scoring two goals each, they played some fantastic football to win the game 8-7.

Sam Catt was awarded man of the match for a somewhat unusual headed goal.

Elsewhere, Joe Horwood was on form for Jobseekers Allowance, scoring a hat-trick against tough opponents Butterflies FC.

While Horwood’s efforts ensured Jobseekers led at the break, Butterflies captain Marcin Maslowski motivated his team to press forward and they were awarded with an equalising goal.

Tomek Borysewicz denied numerous Jobseekers shots and he has to be applauded for his quick reaction saves on the night.

Meanwhile, long-standing Premiership outfit Hemel Elite faced title holders Chicken Kiev on Sunday.

With the scores level at 4-4 at half-time, the pressure was on for both sides to risk counter-attacks to force a lead in the second half.

While a tenacious Steve Bull battled well in midfield for Elite, his colleagues could not prevent man of the match John Durcan from netting an impressive four goals in the game.

Kiev continued to test Elite right up to the final whistle and they went on to win 12-6.

Also in action on the night, Mun City celebrated their first win of the season in a close encounter with hard to beat Gremio.

James Angus was the star player for City as he helped his team secure a valuable 7-5 win and bag two important league points.

Wanderers FC caused an upset in the Premiership as they beat league leaders Puyol Pants Down.

On-form striker Archie McCelland bagged a hat-trick for Wanderers, but Puyol remain at the top of the Premiership, ahead of 2 Goals 1 Cup on goal difference.

The Premiership tie between third and fourth place was an entertaining encounter which saw the points shared between The Smeagles and The Jackson 5-a-side.

Jackson captain Jack Rolfe delegated well throughout the match but The Smeagles were equally well organised and aided by an incredible performance from man of the match Frazer Ewen who played on despite a recurring injury.

He kept the Jackson strike-force at bay with some talented goalkeeping and scores were level at 3-3 at the final whistle.

AEK Hemel front man Casey Linsell stood out once again in his team’s match against Cheeseham United who have vastly improved over the last few fixtures.

Cheeseham were convincing going forward although they couldn’t stop the slick passing moves AEK have become renowned for, supplying their top striker with vital through-balls to win the match 6-4.

Fred West Ham kept the pressure on championship leaders AEK, as they celebrated an 8-3 win over Norfolk & Chance.

Man of the match Daniel Imach was outstanding for Fred West who are just two points behind the leaders, ahead of next week’s top of the table clash.

Anyone interested in joining the league as a team or individual player should call regional manager Gary Connell on 07983 225566.

Table topping Hemel Storm blast past the Warriors

EBL Division One leaders Hemel Storm demolished Leicester Warriors 91-65 in front of their ever-growing noisy band of away fans.

Hemel started the game very much in the ascendancy and went on to dominate the entire match.

Seven foot centre Zak Wells scored Storm’s first six points of the afternoon and, with star guard Bode Adeluola almost matching him point for point, Hemel roared into a 17-5 lead with less than five minutes played.

By the end of the period the lead had grown to 31-16 in Hemel’s favour, and a three-pointer by Dru Spinks extended the advantage to 40-20 in the second quarter.

A steal under his own basket followed by a blazing run the length of the court and an uncontested lay-up by Adeluola had the away fans in raptures and the teams went in at half-time with Storm leading 49-26.

Hemel skipper Simon Kearney opened the second half with a three pointer as the away side built the lead up to 28 points and they went into the fourth period leading 67-40.

Michael Darlow got into the act to notch two three-pointers to get Storm off to the perfect start in the final quarter.

Walid Mumuni added two consecutive scores – including a three from the corner – before coach Steve Darlow decided the time had come to rest his starters and give the bench players some court time.

They didn’t let their coach down and easily closed the game out to claim a big 26-point win.

“We needed that,” said Darlow, adding that it was very important to get a good win after last week’s disappointing home loss.

He was particularly pleased that young Nick Allin, making his league debut, had grabbed four points of his own.

Hemel are back at Sportspace on Saturday for a Division One game against Team Northumbria at 7pm.

West Herts Saturday League Premier Division side Kings Sports earned a point at home to Croxley Community despite going 2-0 down.

Goals from Ben Poulton, Cheki Hokoza and a first goal for his club from Dan Perry enabled the home side to fight back for a 3-3 draw.

Hemel Rovers also had to come from behind and had Myles Cash to thank for both of their goals in a 2-1 win against AC Finchley.

Tring Athletic B came away from Oxhey Jets B with all the points thanks to goals by Luke Holden and Will Salmon. Gadebridge Reserves thumped Oxhey Reserves 5-1 thanks to Lewis Wornham (2), Lewis Crowys, Rick Potton and Charlie Martindale, but Potten End suffered a 3-0 loss at Wriggle Rovers.

Webster Cup action saw Hemel Rovers Reserves manage a 6-4 victory at AFC Croxley, with Neil Perrin (2), Kai Lewis (2), Rhys Stone Bank and Mike McQuade all finding the net.

Alan Dee: Let’s be honest, an honesty box is an opportunity missed

$

Sorry, but the pained protestations of the bigwigs at WH Smith that their punters just can’t be trusted don’t wash with me.

You may have heard that honesty boxes at selected branches of the all-purpose purveyor of greetings cards, stationery and the odd book or newspaper have been scrapped because customers were using them more as litter bins than receptacles for the correct change if they wanted to buy a paper but didn’t want to queue.

The tutting about falling standards of honesty and integrity was widespread, but misplaced.

If people are picking up newspapers and walking off without paying, who can blame them?

I’m afraid large sections of the population have little or no idea that newspapers actually come with a purchase price, and you can understand why.

If you travel by public transport in London or many other major cities, you can pick up a free paper to pass the time.

If you’re staying in a hotel, there’s usually a pile of papers for you to peruse – and these are the same titles that expect you to cough up if you want a copy elsewhere.

You might be travelling by air, and once again there’s usually a stack of papers piled up and just asking you to take your pick – and again these are papers which you’d be expected to pay for anywhere else.

And that’s without taking into account free newspapers that are delivered to your door, or available to pick up from supermarkets or other locations, and the huge amount of information that is available for free online.

Sometimes it seems that the only publication that comes with a purchase price is the Big Issue.

So you can understand why, confronted by an inviting display of national papers on a WH Smith stand, some people just help themselves to a copy and wander off.

But that’s not the real reason for many of these honesty boxes to be banished, is it?

Like any commercial organisation, WH Smith has a keen interest in squeezing as much cash out of customers as it can.

And that means it has no real interest in letting punters escape from the premises having only shelled out for one item.

If you have to join the queue to pay for your paper, there are opportunities galore to flog you more.

You may have only popped in for a paper, but they’d much prefer it if you also picked up a bottle of water, a packet of mints, a book of stamps, a birthday card for your nan, perhaps even a magazine or cut-price paperback – and that’s all before you finally reach the till to be offered giant bars of chocolate and other sundry special offers.

That makes an honest box an opportunity to maximise income missed, and that’s the honest truth.

Hemel Stags have been working hard to promote their first game of the new Championship One season at home to Hunslet Hawks on Sunday.

The Stags took a trip to Paradise Wildlife Park earlier this month to check out the hawks at the park, with club mascot Sammy the Stag being a big favourite of the children.

Then, on Saturday morning, five of the Stags players appeared on BT Sport’s Panel Show to tell Martin Bayfield and a panel of celebrity guests the difference between rugby league and rugby union.

At the same time another crop of players and students from West Herts College hit the streets of Hemel with flyers, posters and Sammy the Stag to promote the Hunslet clash.

Tom Hamlyn Williams, Stags’ sales and marketing director, said: “We strive to have a fantastic environment for fans when they are involved and we will work hard to win new fans into our club family.”

Tickets for Sunday’s clash can be bought at www.hemelstags.com with a 25 per cent discount available online.

Hospital trust recruits 12 midwives in bid to bridge maternity gap

A hospital trust has recruited 12 midwives in its battle against a national shortage of people wanting to do the job.

The West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Hemel Hempstead, Watford and St Albans hospitals, says fewer people are applying to train for the demanding profession and this area is less attractive to prospective employees because of the high price of housing.

Interim chief nurse Jackie Ardley said: “Like many other NHS trusts, we do currently have a shortage of midwives.

“Unfortunately, there are fewer people currently applying to train as midwives and, as midwifery is a seven-day-a-week profession, trained midwives will often leave to become health visitors so that they can work more sociable hours.

“Our hospitals’ locations on the fringe of London, and the high cost of housing in the area is an additional challenge for us when recruiting and retaining midwives.

“Currently we have 25 permanent midwife positions vacant, from an establishment of 170. However, we are pleased to report that we have recently been successful in recruiting 12 newly qualified and experienced midwives from across the UK and Europe who will be shortly joining the team.”

The trust covers any staff shortages with often more expensive bank and agency staff to ensure that ‘safe’ and ‘high quality care’ is provided to all mothers using the maternity service.

The unstoppable Camelot U9 youngsters have taken the coveted Saracens Champions Cup for the third year in succession – beating off the competition of some of the strongest junior teams in the south east of England.

The Camelot boys faced Huntingdon Stags, Old Albanians, Bishop’s Stortford and Sevenoaks III in the knock-out rounds, beating them all to make it into the semi-finals against Sevenoaks II.

A straightforward 4-0 win followed and set up a final showdown with the Sevenoaks firsts, where the day was crowned off with a bruising 5-2 win played during half-time of the Saracens v Exeter Chiefs Aviva Premiership match.

From the start of last season until now, the exceptionally talented Camelot squad has bagged nine tournament wins with only one game lost over the entire 18 month period.

To find out more about getting involved with the team, please visit www.pitchero.com/clubs/camelotrugby

Meanwhile, the Camelot U10s were also in action in the Champions Cup as they returned to the Allianz Park for the third time this season.

Unfortunately this time the step up was too much to return victorious, but coach Les Long said: “It was a super day and on reflection it was a really top effort by the Camelot U10 team against settled A teams from some of the biggest clubs in Saracens ‘catchment.

“There is plenty to learn from the experience and I know that they will learn and improve from this great effort.”

Camelot U10s played a total of five games, scoring five tries and conceding six in a series of tight matches that saw them beat Bromley and Hampstead, lose out to Blackheath on the final play of the match and also suffer very narrow defeats to OA Lions and Aylesford Bulls.

Attention now turns to preparations for the Bournemouth festival in less than six weeks’ time, starting with a home fixture against Fullerians this weekend.

The squad is still on the lookout for new recruits – please email head coach Dave Martin at atdjmartin9@hotmail.com for information.

Andrew’s unleashing a cavalcade of comedy as Pendley gig sets the scene for Berkomedy bandwagon

Diehard comedy fans who made the trek to Aylesbury’s tiny Limelight theatre last summer for one of the many tempting double delights that made up the Tringe festival certainly got their money’s worth.

On the same bill were Bridget Christie, whose work in progress set went on to scoop the top comedy prize at the Edinburgh Festival, and Andrew Lawrence.

If the second name doesn’t ring an immediate bell just imagine what Jack Dee’s depressed nephew might be like – younger, of course, but just as despairing and deadpan about the state of the world.

Acerbic Andrew is back in these parts on Friday night, playing the more expansive space of Pendley’s Court Theatre.

And he’s just the advance guard for a cavalcade of comedy being served up in the coming weeks.

The comedian who coaxed Stephen Fry to go public about his suicide bid is also on his way to Tring.

Evergreen veteran Richard Herring, whose interview podcasts have become essential listening for all keen followers of the comedy scene, will be bringing his latest show, We’re All Going To Die, to the same venue on Thursday, March 13.

And a string of star names have been lined up to feature in the second Berkomedy Festival, which kicks off on Sunday.

The Greene Room in Berkhamsted’s Kings Arms will host double bills almost daily until March 20, and a passport deal provides 14 nights of top comedy for just £65.

Opening the programme will be Romesh Ranganathan and Angela Barnes from Channel 4’s Stand Up For The Week and other names to feature include Nick Helm, whose sitcom Uncle has just completed a successful TV run.

Levy Ladies up to fifth after comfortable Sawbridgeworth victory

$

Leverstock Green Ladies continued their winning run with a resounding 3-0 victory over Sawbridgeworth which sees them move up to fifth in the Eastern Region Premier League.

The first half was a closely fought contest, with the visitors denied on several occasions by a stout Leverstock Green defence led by Jo Williams and Steph Belcher.

Right-back Sapphire Kalinski pulled up on 38 minutes with a thigh strain and, following a reshuffle, super striker Nic Hollick was introduced from the bench.

Hollick took a mere 14 seconds to make an impact, breaking the deadlock and rewarding Levy with a first half lead that was not altogether deserved.

Player of the match Giselle Subryan doubled Levy’s lead 15 minutes into the second half following some strong wing play from Gemma Coggins and Lucy Tape.

Stand-in right-back Heather Eaton was unfortunate to provide the visitors with a slim chance to get back in the game with a tackle that resulted in Sawbridgeworth being awarded a penalty.

But keeper Jess Devoti became the hero yet again for Levy, producing a fine save low to her right to deny the visitors.

Midfield maestro Charlene Turturici caused the visitors problems throughout the match, but it was Sally Green’s through-ball that provided Subryan with an opportunity to add another to her goal tally, which she duly converted after 87 minutes.

Sunday sees two Leverstock Green Ladies sides play one another for the first time in their history in the County Cup semi-final, with the match taking place at Pancake Lane.
