AN MP is supporting plans to build a railway line through the Chilterns despite opposition from rural campaigners.

The ‘High Speed 2’ line would offer a 39-minute route between Birmingham and London.

South West Herts MP David Gauke spoke out at the annual meeting of Berkhamsted Chamber of Commerce last Wednesday.

He said: “It is vital for the UK economy that we have a world-class transport infrastructure.

“It is right that we try and link up the major cities in Britain.”

At Berkhamsted Town Council’s annual general meeting the previous week, Michael Nidd from the Campaign to Protect Rural England blasted the proposition.

He said: “The suggestion is we build this fancy railway in and save lots and lots of money.”

But he said it wouldn’t work and would damage the Chilterns.
