Tring 31-14 Westcliff

THE Tring first team have rocketed to third in the table – their highest ever league position – following a five-try win against Westcliff.

Westcliff struck first with a penalty after five minutes, but Tring responded strongly with three first half tries.

The first came from club captain Johnny Morgan, and that was followed closely by a second by William Mateai.

The third try was sublime breakaway effort from number 14 Liam Chennells, who showed a clean pair of heels to his opposite number to fly over the line.

This brought the score to 19-6, before Chennells was yellow carded for a dangerous tackle.

The tackle resulted in three more points for Westcliff, and the teams ran in at half time with Tring leading by 19 points to 6.

Tring started the second half sluggishly and rarely made the opposition half in the first twenty minutes.

However, the side recovered their form and were rewarded with a bonus point-winning fourth try from Nathan Lambden.

In the dying minutes of the game, Dave Shotton galloped over the try line to claim Tring’s fifth try of the afternoon, which was duly converted by Chennells to leave the final score 31-14.

The third team, meanwhile, beat Old Haberdashers seconds 29-17, and the fourth XI beat Bishop’s Stortford V 50 - 21.
