200 Hertfordshire volunteers who helped make this summer’s London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games such a success were thanked by inspirational athletes from Team GB at a special event.
Etienne Stott, who won Olympic gold in the C2 canoe slalom with partner Tim Baillie, and David Clarke, the Paralympics GB 5-a-side football captain, were at the celebration event at the Hertfordshire Sports Village, Hatfield, to thank the volunteers.
The event was organised by the Hertfordshire Is Ready For Winners partnership to thank those who took part as Games Makers, ceremony performers, stewards for the Olympic Torch Relay or Paralympic Flame celebrations, as well as other voluntary roles.
Derrick Ashley, the chair of Hertfordshire Olympic and Paralympics Legacy Board, said: “Volunteers played a vital part in making the Games in London such a great success and this was an opportunity to say thank you to them”.
Volunteer Centre Dacorum manager Heather Allen gave a presentation and said: “Many of the Games Makers were involved in volunteering before the Olympics, but for some it was a new experience. We are keen to ensure that one of the legacies of the Olympics is greater participation in volunteering, so I hope that local Games Makers will be in touch with us”.
For others who have been inspired to volunteer following the games, there are a host of sporty opportunities in Dacorum based clubs.
The Dacorum Sports Network is looking for a volunteer secretary who can manage records and correspondence as well as support the Chairman with meetings.
The network was formed in 2007 and plays a key role in ensuring that Dacorum has a healthy and active community. It provides advice and guidance on sports matters to clubs and volunteer groups.
The right volunteer will have good administration skills and an understanding of committee work. A home PC with email is a must as much of this role is home based. They would be expected to attend six meetings a year in various locations around Dacorum.
And a volunteer with a way with words is wanted by Herts Baseball Club. Based at Grovehill Ballpark on Washington Avenue, the club needs a volunteer reporter who can write reports on adult team games. Journalistic experience isn’t necessary but good communication skills and an interest in meeting new people will help in this role.
