A TREASURY minister defended his government from calls by Labour opponents to reduce public sector spending cuts.

David Gauke, also MP for South West Herts, answered backbench MPs’ questions in parliament.

At the Tuesday session Luton North MP Kelvin Hopkins said the UK had higher debt in 1945 than now, but the Labour government did not cut but increased jobs.

The Labour man said Mr Gauke should learn from this.

Mr Gauke said Labour did cut debt in the 40s: “That is not a bad thing to do, this government wants to do it, but the Labour party wants to put debt up.”

Changing course now would put the economy at risk, he said.
