Head blasts the parents who put little lives at risk

A school headteacher has threatened to publish the number plates of parents who speed down its private slip-road and put children’s lives at risk.

Rachel Swaffield said the 85 per cent of pupils who walk to Bridgewater School in Berkhamsted are being put in danger by a small minority of inconsiderate drivers.

She said: “Our site supervisor has actually had to leap into the road to drag some children out of the way of a speeding car in our slip road.

“He has done it twice this term, which is two times too many – and we have only been back a month. That’s twice when their lives have been put at risk.

“It is just about using your common sense on a daily basis.

“This term, the problem has been particularly bad – but it has been a problem for years.”

She said the slip-road to the school where the problem is most frequent is on private land, so parents should not be using it at all.

Parents also park to wait for their children on the school’s zig-zag keep clear lines, on bends and on double yellow lines near the Bridle Way school, Mrs Swaffield said.

She has spoken to the police and says parents who break road laws can expect to be cautioned for their ‘selfish behaviour’ if it continues.

Police will carry out random patrols in the area and Mrs Swaffield is thinking of sending them the registration numbers of persistent offenders. She said: “I have in the past published them in my school newsletter, and I will do it again if I can remember them or write them down.”
