A medal-winning blind bowler will be able to take part in the sport’s world championships next year after being given two charitable grants.
Sarah Marshall was given £175 by Berkhamsted Lions and also received £175 from the Rotary Club of Berkhamsted Bulbourne.
The 46-year-old, of Sycamore Rise, Berkhamsted, has just won a silver award at the UK Home International Tournament for visually impaired bowlers at Llandrindod Wells, Wales.
She was competing in the Ladies B1 Singles for the totally blind and almost totally blind.
The year before, she won the Ladies B1 National Singles Championship for the totally blind in Worthing.
She said: “Taking part in tournaments is expensive, so I would like to thank the Lions and Rotary very much.”
Sarah lost her sight in 2005 as a side effect of prescribed medication. Two years later, she joined Chesham Pioneers Bowling Club, one of 50 clubs for the blind and partially sighted.
The sport is played by the visually impaired after a fully-sighted person describes the position of the jack, or the marker, to them.
They then have to get their bowls as near as possible to it without hitting it.
