Moor End markings ‘non compliant’

CAMPAIGNERS say it is ‘quite likely’ roads chiefs will have to return fines dished out to motorists using Moor End Road.

Traffic camera action group NoToMob claims the markings around the bus lane do not comply with Department for Transport rules and they hope to prove it with a test case.

Hemel Hempstead co-ordinator Colin Thomas said: “We’re pretty certain that Herts County Council could well be prosecuting people unlawfully. The road markings are non compliant. It’s quite likely the county council will have to repay all the penalties they have issued.”

The group was demonstrating at Moor End Road on Saturday and managed to save around 100 motorists from a £60 fine.

Since the camera started operating in August more than 28,600 fines have been issued and an average of 100 drivers a day are still getting caught.

NoToMob estimates the fines total around £1 million.

The group has obtained correspondence between the county council and the Department for Transport using the Freedom of Information Act, which it claims shows signs and markings are ‘wrong’.

Steve Baker, one of the founding members of the group, said: “We turned away over 100 people on Saturday. It’s so constant there is obviously something wrong.

“Something has to be done about this and we’ve had enough of being ignored.”

Stuart Pile, highways cabinet chief at the council, said: “We have reviewed the signs and road markings in Moor End Road and believe that they are correct.

“We will look at the information provided by Mr Baker and, if necessary, seek further legal advice. “
